Franciscan Monastery, Zadar
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This Franciscan monastery is home to the oldest Gothic church of Dalmatia, and behind its austere outer walls are Baroque altars and handsome Gothic stalls in the chancel (1394). The church's main claim to fame, however, are its collections of religious art and the sacristy, richly decorated with carved woodwork. In particular admire the 12C painted Romanesque Byzantine crucifix, a polyptych by Ivan Petrov (1450), icons and paintings and splendid illuminated manuscripts (13C-14C).
