The Michelin Guide's review
This foothill in the Vosges mountains at 956m above sea level witnessed one of the most emblematic battles of the Vosges in the First World War. At the exit of the national necropolis, after visiting the Historial devoted to the Vosges front, a 4.5km scenographic tour takes visitors through the remains of part of the old battlefield on the ridge. It goes past many well-preserved vestiges (trenches, bunkers, fortified rocks, lookout positions and forts). A European Cross for Peace stands at the top of the Vieil Armand and there is a commemorative monument to the 152nd French Infantry Regiment.
