Established in 1890 as the International Union of American Republics, this organization is the oldest such alliance of nations in the world. It was created to engender peaceful relations and economic cooperation among the independent countries of the Americas. In its more than 100-year history, it has grown from 24 member nations to 35, the most recent to join being Canada, in 1990. The US was a charter member of the organization.
