The Michelin Guide's review
Already occupied between 600 and 200 BC, the Mitla site developed properly from the year 1000 AD onwards. Most of the buildings visible today date from the 13C and 14C and demonstrate a perfect style of Zapotec architecture which was certainly influenced by the Mixtecs. Mitla's most famous feature is its intricate geometrical decor made up of thousands of small pieces of cut stone covering the façades with spectacular mosaics.
