Tateyama Museum of Toyama
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This museum provides an insight into every facet of Mount Tateyama (3,015m/9,891ft) and looks at the natural environment of this still active volcano. Its deadly fumaroles, known as "hells", led to it becoming a sacred mountain and a major pilgrimage site in the early centuries, both for Shintoism and Buddhism. This cultural and religious aspect is depicted on the 1st floor by numerous objects and documents (statues, painted scrolls, mandalas).
