The Michelin Guide's review
Sumoto Castle, strategically located on the eastern bank of Awaji island, dates from the 16C and was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to control the bay of Osaka. The town of Sumoto then developed, becoming a major port. The castle, which had become obsolete, was demolished in 1642. The keep was patiently reconstructed in 1928, although out of concrete and only the surrounding walls and foundations are original. The site enjoys an outstanding view of the bay of Osaka, nearby Kii Peninsula.
