The Michelin Guide's review
The site of Somogyvár, founded in 1091, continues to impress modern-day visitors. It was the work of Benedictines from St Giles Abbey in France who answered the call of King Ladislas I and came to found this monastery. For over six centuries Somogyvár was the capital of the comitat (comparable to a county). The remains still visible on the site make it possible to appreciate the immense proportions of the church which was 60m long and 24m wide. The foundations of the cloisters are also still visible.
