This vast open space provides a backdrop to San Miniato's monuments, including the 12C cathedral, the belfry of which was once the defensive tower of an old castle. To the left of the cathedral stands the Museum of Sacred Art (works by artists from the 14C to the 19C). The 12C Bishop's Palace is the former residence of the Signori Dodici (12 magistrates of the town) and the 12C Palazzo dei Vicari dell'Imperatore has been converted into a hotel.
