Malls and staggered lines of lime trees were planted in terraces in the 18C. The king's cottage garden, part of this ensemble, displays food that was loaded onto ships, medicinal plants used by navy surgeons and linen and hemp used to make the sails and ropes. It was originally a botanical garden designed to teach pupils of the Navy's medical school and also supplied plants to the hospital.
