The Michelin Guide's review
Built by Colbert in 1666, this Classical building is a rare example of 17C industrial architecture and boasts a particularly impressive façade looking out towards the Charente. It was here that ropes for the great warships of the time were made. The advent of steam meant the end of the rope factory, which is nowadays home to the Centre International de la Mer, a centre dedicated to ropemaking and ropes through the ages.
