The Michelin Guide's review
The Imperial Palace stands at the heart of the Praça XV de Novembro. Now a cultural centre, it hosts temporary exhibitions, as well as a library and bookshop. Built in the 18C, this palace with its colonial architecture is steeped in history. In turn the residence of the viceroy of Brazil, King João VI of Portugal and the country's emperors, it was here that the abolition of slavery was proclaimed in 1888. The restaurant, which opens onto a lovely inner courtyard, is to be recommended.
