The Michelin Guide's review
This church (1755), which stands next to the old cathedral, is part of a large complex belonging to the Carmelite Order. The grey granite façade crowned with two bell towers is typical of Portuguese architecture. The Baroque and neo-Classicism go hand in hand, with a fine blazon of the Virgin (imported from Portugal in 1761) above the portal. On the inside, the nave, which boasts an exceptional gilded decor, is crowned with a dome and there are sculptures by Luís da Fonseca and his protégé, the future Mestre Valentim.
