The Michelin Guide's review
Facing the Saint-Charles River, the northern section of the fortifications was long neglected because the cliff provided an adequate natural defense. After the American invasion of 1775-76, it was decided to complete this section of the walls surrounding the Upper Town. In the monastery garden, adjacent to the entrance portal, note the former powder magazine, built in 1820 to supply the northern cannon batteries.
