The Michelin Guide's review
Frederick II of Hohenstaufen had this powerful castle built in 1248 in order to reinforce the position of the Ghibellines in Tuscany and form a fortified post on the road linking the two parts of his territory: the Germanic Empire and the Kingdom of Sicily. The building, which was much modified in the 18C and restored in the 20C, is crowned with typical swallow-tailed merlons.
