The Michelin Guide's review
This vast Buddhist sanctuary (candi sewu means "thousand temples") was built in the 8C by the kingdom of the Sailendra. The main temple, crowned with a stupa and surrounded by eight annexe temples, is guarded by four imposing statues of giants armed with clubs; 240 small temples in four rows surround the complex, the largest of its kind in Indonesia after Borobudur.
