The Michelin Guide's review
Originally, Princess Augusta of Saxe-Weimar commissioned Schinkel to build a neo-Gothic residence in 1833. But the taste of the lady of the house for elaborate decors led to a quarrel with the architect, who preferred airy interiors, as seen in the octagonal dining hall. In the end, the castle was extended, after 1840, by an architect who was better matched to the wishes of the royal couple, hence the curiously over-ornate and disparate result. The neo-Gothic ballroom is particularly noteworthy.
