The Michelin Guide's review
This delightful Renaissance square (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is lined with the city's main monuments, built by the architect Bernardino Rossellino at the request of Pope Pius II. The principle behind its architectural design was to reflect the balance between civil and religious power in the city, and to bring it all together to one place. That is why the cathedral is opposite the town hall, and the Piccolomini Palace stands across from the episcopal palace.
