The Michelin Guide's review
This "café-concert hall" opened in 1889 to entertain Montmartre's bourgeois and bohemian crowd, was to experience an unprecedented fate thanks to Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1891, the artist, whose muse was la Goulue, endowed the French cancan and the Moulin-Rouge with international status. Later, artists such as Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier and Joséphine Baker contributed to the cabaret's reputation and it still stages dinner-shows that are both frivolous and sophisticated.
