The Michelin Guide's review
Place du Châtelet is named after an ancient fortress built here to protect the northern entrance to the city. Today, it is flanked by two theatres built by Davioud in 1862. Le Châtelet hosted Diaghilev's Russian ballet company, as well as Caruso, Mahler, and Nijinsky. The Théâtre de la Ville, formerly the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt, now stages contemporary dance and world music performances. The Fontaine du Châtelet, or Fontaine du Palmier, (1806-07) commemorates Napoleon I's victories.
