Loos-en-Gohelle Twin Slag Heaps
Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's Opinion
Shaped by mining activity as of the late 19C, Loos-en-Gohelle is now home to the two tallest slag heaps from coalmining in Europe, the Terrils Jumeaux. Combined with pit no 11/19, which illustrates radically different extraction techniques, these two giant pyramids reach a height of 186m. Since the mines ceased operations in 1986, tree and bush vegetation has developed on the slopes, which now support a variety of wildlife. The peaks offer a breathtaking 360° panoramic view.
