These elegant streets are lined with old-fashioned shop fronts are home to well-known bookshops, pastelarias and cafés. The most famous of these is A Brasileira, once frequented by the poet, Fernando Pessoa. Since the centenary of his birth in 1988, a bronze statue of the poet, in a pensive mood, sits at one of the tables on the terrace.
