The Michelin Guide's Opinion
This gate, built by Simon Vollant between 1685 and 1692 as a tribute to Louis XIV, was part of the ramparts. It is the only example of city gate doubling as a triumphal arch. The outer side features an arcade, decorated with the coat of arms of Lille (a lys) and of France (three lys). At the top, Victory is about to crown Louis XIV, depicted by a medallion. On the inner side, the gate resembles a pavilion.
