Grotte des Combarelles
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This cave, attributed to the middle Magdalenian (between 16 000 and 13 000), has an abundance of rock paintings. A winding, dark and narrow corridor, with numerous markings on 250m of walls, often engraved, sometimes enhanced with paint. Nearly 700 figures of all sorts: horses, bison, bears, mammoths, felines and caricatured human figures. Notice the lioness, in fact a cave lion mid-leap, carved on the left-hand wall... A masterpiece!
