The Michelin Guide's review
Nanzen-ji, a Zen complex since the 13C, stands in wooded grounds and is comprised of several secondary temples. The most spectacular, Hojo seiryo-den, has been designated a National Treasure on account of the paintings that adorn the fusuma (sliding screens). The huge main gate, San-mon sports a beautifully painted ceiling by artists of the Kano school. To the southwest of the gate, Konchi-in pavilion boasts a landscaped garden by Kobori Enshu.
