Castlegate
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Castlegate has several attractively restored houses. Nos 64 and 67 on the left have two sculptures, set into the walls, one of which might present Turnbull's bull. The abbey close was once the scene of a visit from Scott to the Wordsworths in 1803; he is said to have sat there and read them passages from his Lay of the Last Ministrels (plaques at nos 6 and 7). In 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at no 11 further down Castlegate when leading the Jacobite army on its march towards England.
