The Schöllenen

The Michelin Guide's review
Between Göschenen et Andermatt, the Reuss Valley narrows dramatically, accentuating its shiny granite slopes. This is the legendary Schöllenen gorge, the main obstacle to opening up the St Gothard route until the 13C when an audacious trackway was cut through its depths. More recent road development has spoilt its wild appearance, but following the original route on foot will give thrill-seekers a feel for the gorge's "infernal" character.
