The Michelin Guide's review
Looming over the square, from the top of a 46m fluted column, is the statue of Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville, often referred to as "Harry IX, the Uncrowned King of Scotland" for his running of Scottish affairs between 1782 and 1805, The square, where banks and insurance companies are concentrated, has nothing of the elegant harmony of Charlotte Street, in spite of a few fine buildings. Look out for Buchan House (nos 21 and 22) and Dundas House.
