The Michelin Guide's review
This independent school was founded thanks to a donation by George Heriot (1563-1624), goldsmith to King James VI. Heriot bequeathed his fortune so that "fatherless bairns" could receive an education. The 17C building is laid out symmetrically around a quadrangle - a design that is typical of a great many early-Renaissance buildings - and features a wealth of sculpted stones and ornamental bands.
