The Michelin Guide's review
The famous street now lined with shops and cinemas was originally a walk outlined by Luke Gardiner in the 18C and then changed into a narrow residential square. Extended in 1794 to the south as far as Carlisle Bridge, in 1922 it was named after the lawyer and politician, the "Liberator" Daniel O'Connell, who obtained the Act of Emancipation for Irish Catholics from the English.
