Born in Patara (3C), St Nicholas became Bishop of Myra, then, over the following centuries, patron saint of children and merchants. His Byzantine-style church is decorated with marble and colonnades which contrast with dry-stone walls. The graceful vaulted chapels, numerous mosaics and rustic charm of the fragments of primitive frescoes are most delightful. The so-called sarcophagus of St Nicholas is also a moving sight, even though we now know that the tomb is not that of the saint.
