The Michelin Guide's review
The Three Pagodas, symbols of Dali, were part of Chongsheng Temple, which was destroyed in the late 19C. Qianxun Pagoda (69m, 16 storeys) is the tallest of the pagodas. It was built in 836, at a time when the Nanzhao rulers adopted Greater Vehicle Buddhism (Mahayana). At that time, it was possible to climb up the pagoda to take in the view of the lake.
