The Michelin Guide's review
This predominantly wooded island was purchased by Louis II of Bavaria in 1873 to protect it from systematic deforestation. It is particularly famous because of Herrenchiemsee Castle, known as the new castle. The island is home to another castle, comprising the remains of an Augustinian monastery, built in the 12C and now housing a museum retracing the history of the island.
