Washington Square Park, Chicago's oldest green space, was given to the city in 1842 by the promoter Orsamus Bushnell, in the hope that it would stimulate residential development in the neighbouring blocks. Today the homes along Dearborn Street, between Chicago Avenue and Maple Street, hark back to the late 19C.
