The Michelin Guide's review
Years ahead of its time (1895), this building by Charles B. Atwood was a forerunner in the construction of glass and steel skyscrapers by the Second Chicago school. The building illustrates the possibilities inherent in metal frame construction. Its façade is almost entirely made of glass, with pillars and tympana typical of Gothic ornamentation. Converted into a hotel, The Alise Chicago, the building has preserved some of its original features such as its mosaic floors and some of its ironwork.
