The Michelin Guide's review
Dedicated to Saint Agatha, patron saint of Catania, the cathedral was initially built as a fortified church in the late 11C by Norman king, Roger 1st. The current edifice, from 1693, boasts a lavish façade, a masterpiece by Vaccarini. Inside the bases of some of the edifice's original pillars have been uncovered and to the right of the central nave, you will see Bellini's tomb. Saint Agatha's chapel, adorned in lavish gilt work, is home to the saint's relics and treasure.
