In 1871, Mayor Jules Anspach decided to give Brussels a city centre fitting of a capital. The French architects he commissioned employed a Haussmann model and used stone, a novelty in brick-built Brussels. The square that Brel once sung about may have lost some of its architectural homogeneity, but it remains one of the hubs of city life, with an administrative, commercial and cultural role.
