The Michelin Guide's review
It's clear from this museum that Afrikaans is not a language easily summed up in a few words. "Cooked up in the Bush", this language was born in the heterogeneous communities of the Cape as a Dutch Creole variant. It became a key aspect of the Boer identity, but was subsequently associated with the machinery of apartheid oppression. Today an official language along with 11 others, it is experiencing multiracial renewal and resisting the pressures of globalisation.
