The Michelin Guide's review
This typical medieval stronghold commanded the narrow strip of lowland between the Cotswolds and the River Severn. The inner courtyard is dominated by the great drum of the keep (1153); its outer walls still show the breach made by a Cromwellian cannon during the siege of 1645. The castle's defences could be strengthened by flooding the surrounding water meadows which can be seen from the entrance.
