Lac du Malsaucy and the Étang de la Véronne, the two largest bodies of water in Belfort, are set against the mountain backdrop of the Ballon d'Alsace and Ballon de Servance, the highest points in the southern Vosges. The lake is a designated "Espace Naturel Sensible" and bird refuge, an area where local nature is protected. The more energetic can get to the lake by bike, via the Promenade François Mitterrand (cycle path); it takes about 30min (7.5km) from downtown Belfort.
