Some fine 15C houses continue to grace Place St Sauveur and the uphill lanes of this charming port. Rue du Petit-Port, home to artist's workshops, is particularly picturesque. Quai Benjamin Franklin is a reminder that in 1776 this illustrious American, who was in charge of negotiating a treaty with France, arrived at Auray, since head winds had prevented his ship The Reprisal, from sailing to Nantes. The house he stayed in, at No 8, bears a commemorative plaque.
