An extension of the National Garden, the Zappeion is a huge exhibition hall designed by T Hansen and F Boulanger. It is named after E Zappa, a rich Greek of the Alexandria diaspora, who ploughed his not inconsiderable fortune into trying to restore Athens to its former glory, focusing on what had made the city a success: architecture, art and athleticism.
