Château d'Assier
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This château (1525-1535) would have been equal to those of Blois or Chenonceau, but the estate, sold in 1766, was entirely dismantled with the exception of the west wing. Following a visit by Mérimée in 1841, the romantic stone ruins became a listed monument. The exterior façade retains traces of machicolation between its two round towers, while the inner façade is decorated with carved friezes. In the castle, note the Gothic-Renaissance transition staircase and the superb sculpted pillar.
