The Michelin Guide's review
Angoulême still has much of its medieval surrounding wall (9C-13C). In the 18C, most of the towers and walls were levelled to make way for walkways. The following century, the gates disappeared and vast residences and affluent buildings grew up on the Remparts du Midi, bathed in the sun. The suggested itinerary therefore takes in vestiges of the past and the bourgeois art of living in the 19C.
