This district, known as the "new section", corresponds to the western part of the city centre once separated from the Oude Zijde ("old section") by the Amsteel (now the Damrak-Rokin artery). The names were given to the districts when the parish was divided at the time of the construction of the Nieuwe Kerk in the 15C.
