The Michelin Guide's review
Behind its nickname (Red Light District), rich in innuendo, lies the old side (Oude Zijde) of the historic centre. The district is also called De Walletjes (little walls), due to the narrowness of the old lanes and "shop windows" where the prostitutes can be seen. The interest of this district lies in its surprising mix of historic monuments, canals, artists' studios, sex shops and red neon lights.
