The Michelin Guide's review
This museum covers the cultural, economic, religious and military history of the Alta region and also has a section dedicated to the aurora borealis. But the main attraction is outside! On a plot gently sloping towards the banks of the fjord, admire the famous Alta rock carvings and paintings, which are astonishingly varied. A 5km network of raised paths enables visitors to see some of the rock art: dating from between 4000 and 500 BC, it is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
