The Michelin Guide's review
Built in 1796 on Iimoriyma hillside, this beautiful Buddhist temple features an orthogonal three-storey pagoda (16.5m/54ft high) and a double spiral ramp, extremely rare in Japan, enabling visitors to go up and down without passing each other. Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered in inscriptions that bear witness to the significance of this pilgrimage site during the Edo period, when each visitor inscribed their name to prove that they had been here. The original statues, however, are no longer visible due to their fragility.
