The Michelin Guide's review
This museum dedicated to biology, geology, archaeology and astronomy also charts the history of York, from the Roman then Viking occupations up to the Middle Ages. The Middleham Jewel and Ring are its star exhibits. One section is devoted to St Mary's Abbey (1088). Also worth seeing, in the garden, is the observatory, which houses a telescope from 1850 and a clock that set the city's official time... 4min 20min behind Greenwich.
