The Michelin Guide's review
Built in 1813 for Yogyakarta's second dynasty, the Pakualaman ("pivot of the universe"), this palace faces south in a sign of obedience to Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. Like the kraton, its layout reveals a succession of courtyards dotted with pendopo. To the south, a small alun-alun leads to the main courtyard (the only one open to visitors), home to the Bangsal Sewotomo, characteristic of Javanese architecture. A small European pavilion with a pretty wooden façade stands next-door.
