The Michelin Guide's review
Buckland Abbey was the last Cistercian abbey built in England and Wales. In the 16C it became an Elizabethan mansion and, later on, a family home. It was restored after a fire in 1938. Particular points of interest are the 14C barn, the Four Lives Gallery running the full length of the original nave, the Drake Gallery, added in the 1570s, the impressive Great Hall with its fine plasterwork, and the kitchen with its coal-fired brick ovens.
